What Chris is up to at the moment...

What I am up to...

8th July 2011

I am currently working hard structuring my business concept for a small to medium business advisory service. The main focus will be upon customer connectivity and service development.

I attended an SIE 3 day start up conference in July, which has helped me out greatly. I also have a great support network helping me construct my thoughts and ideas.

I cannot wait to help out businesses and provide them with tools and assistance to develop their customer relationships and ultimately increase their sales.

Thanks to Fusion Hair Salon, CMSL and Q-Ten for helping me construct my business model.

Chris.

I need your help!

Can I get my facebook page from no.45 to no. 1 on Google? (A Twitter and SERP test)

If you search Google for "Chris Marr" right now (6th May 2011) and look through the search results you will find my facebook (http://www.facebook.com/chrismarr101) at no.45. At number 2 is another Chris Marr's facebook profile. (slightly annoying!).

I have set up a tweet to go out at 12.05pm everyday for the next 7 days. The tweet reads "Good afternoon everyone! Join me on facebook at http://www.facebook.com/chrismarr101".

The hypothesis is that if I tweet everyday, with a tweet containing the url for my facebook page, my facebook page will appear further up in the search results page.

It will also be interesting to see what happens once I stop tweeting...I guess it will slowly depress

Now, it would be great to get some retweets too, so if you want to be part of this little test then please get on to twitter and retweet my tweet that will go out at 12.05pm everyday from 7th May to 13th May.

At the end of the test I will make sure you get a big thanks and get included as part of this little experiment!

Let the retweeting begin and lets see what happens!

Update 11th May 2011

I have been checking everyday and on the first day I searched "Chris Marr" and I couldn't even find a link to my facebook page. Since then, with that search, I cannot find it anywhere in Google. However, I began to also search "Chris Marr Facebook" and from the start I was coming in on the first page, 4th from the top...today my page is the 3rd from the top, so that's something!

I read an article today that confirmed my thoughts that getting your facebook page to appear on the first page in a search engine takes in other factors, such as: -

  • How old your page is
  • How many people like your page
  • How many friends they have
  • How much content you put up, and how much of an impression it makes
  • How many people share content from your page

I'm going to keep at it and see what else I can be doing...one obvious thing is to use backlinks, which I have been doing a little bit of in the last few months with my blog, and from the use of analytics, people have been referred from the places where links to my blog have been placed, so it is obvious to me that backlinks have huge potential

I would love to hear any of your thoughts on this, please email me.

Also, thanks to all of you who have been retweeting the last few days! Your help is much appreciated!

Chris.

Update 14th May 2011

Today I searched the term "Chris Marr" on google and the result was the bog at 1st. Position...twitter and linked in on the 1st page also. I normally get to page 30 and give up when looking for the Facebook page, but I found it on page 14 today...massive improvement on not being able to find it in the 1st 300 results!

This could be due to RT's, more likes and more updates...hard to tell exactly.

Massive thanks to everyone for their help with this little experiment, it has definitely shown that with a strategy that includes a few angles you can improve where you come out on the search engine results page. Now I need to get more likes on the facebook page and improve and add content to my blog!
